Makeup Organizing Tips

Let’s face it, bathrooms aren’t made for the amounts of makeup that I have, but I don’t think bathrooms are even made for the amounts of makeup that the everyday woman has either! The space and compartments just aren’t there. That is why I think it is so important to use the space you do have very wisely! In the new house we are in, there is roughly ZERO storage for my makeup. I had to come up with something creative to keep my makeup accessible, without it looking like clutter. Here are some of my makeup organizing tips that I learned while getting my makeup organizing system figured out.

I truly believe that if your makeup is easy to access, you are more likely to wear makeup and use more of your makeup options. That is why [Read more…]

Chalkboard Painted Jars

You know when you make something that you really love and then a few years later, you feel like you have totally grown out of it? That is exactly what happened with my color blocked chalkboard mason jars. I love the concept, but they just weren’t really my style anymore.

Color Block Chalkboard Mason Jars

I decided to take my chalkboard jars up a notch by replacing the mason jars with jars of more modern shapes and making them gold and black… my favorite!

Kids’ Art Organization Display

My daughter loves pictures. She loves coloring pictures and keeping every, single one of them. She likes finding photos and stuffing them in every purse she owns, and sometimes she even sleeps with them. I find myself picking up her treasured pictures everywhere I go. Sometimes it gets a little out of hand and I have to throw a few away when she isn’t looking. She just is so proud of them, that I started feeling bad for throwing them away. I wanted a place for her to be able to show off her treasures, so I made a fun little board to organize her art and be able to display them for all to see.

This kids’ art organization display is one of the easiest projects I have ever taken on, and I already know it is going to make a serious impact on how organized her room feels. The fun thing about this is it can be totally customized for different kids and where you are going to be displaying their artwork. I was able to find this adorable wooden arrow at Michael’s and I just loved it, but if you had a certain theme in a room you wanted to stick with, you could do any shape you wanted. You could even use a scrap of wood. Here is what I used to create this display…

Easy Closet Organizing Tips on www.girllovesglam.com

If you have been a reader of mine for a while, you probably know that I am slightly obsessed with organized spaces. I love them! There is nothing that is more satisfying than to have an organized home where things are easy to find. After moving to a rental, I had a difficult time creating as organized of a space as I wanted because we lost about 200 sq ft and a huge garage that we had before. This created quite the challenge when it came to finding a place for all of our stuff, and we all know that it is important for everything to have a place!  [Read more…]

Colorful Corner Gallery Wall

How to create a corner gallery wall on www.girllovesglam.com

Rentals can be no fun. After owning my own home and taking on projects to make it my own, it is hard to live somewhere that I can’t make any major changes to. However, I do appreciate not having to pay for the random repairs that have come up since living in our rental. I have been able to keep my decorating sanity with a hammer and nails and of course some Command Strips too, because heaven knows, I am obsessed with those things.

Our bedroom felt like it needed something funky that would make it feel like our own space. Of course there is the option of a traditional gallery wall, but why go traditional, when there is a corner just begging to turn into something more?

DIY Hat and Necklace Display

I was challenged by FloraCraft® to come up with a way to use one of their foam heads. I really wanted to come up with something that wasn’t Halloween related and this is what I came up with!

While watching Downton Abby, I was inspired by their gorgeous outfits and accessories. I wanted to take a little slice of Downton Abby for myself and make a hat and necklace display like they used to have back in the old days. I love that I am able to switch out what hat and necklace I display on it to keep in my office. It helps add a fun, unique style to the room and is still totally functional. [Read more…]

Organization Board Family Command Center

In March 2012, I made an organization board to help keep my family in order. I made it with a baby strapped to my chest and decided to put it on my blog that I had just quit my day job for. Three months earlier, I had decided to take the plunge and be a full time blogger… at the exact same time as I had my first child. Interesting timing, right? Well, that little organization board tutorial went VIRAL! I had no idea what was going on. I just suddenly was getting hundreds of comments, emails, and my life was completely changed. That post is still one of my top traffic sources to this day, but I cringe every time I see it pinned on Pinterest, which is over 500k times… that is a lot of cringing! The lighting was terrible and I am SO over chevron print and the colors aren’t exactly my style anymore. You can see the full tutorial for my first organization board, here.

Organization board

I have wanted to change up the good ol’ organization board for a while now, but just have had ZERO motivation to do it. Once we moved, I decided to finally take on that project. I set my entire old board a side and started fresh! Ladies and gentlemen (for the one random dude who happens to come across this post), I present to you… The Organization Board Family Command Center version 2.0!

Ahhhhh… isn’t that so much better? I really wanted to bring in some natural elements with the stained wood, while keeping some funky features like the stripes and the metallics.

My First House Swan Song

As the week starts, I am pretty overwhelmed with feelings about closing on our house. There will be a new family moving in this weekend. I really am a total basket of emotions inside. I feel happy that the right person walked through our house so quickly. I feel relieved to be leaving the stress of home ownership for a little while while we rent. I feel sad to be leaving my family behind in Idaho Falls. I feel heartbroken to leave the beautiful memories that we created as a family by becoming first time parents in that house. I feel torn to leave all of my work in that house.

I can’t help but think of that episode of Glee where they all sing their final swan songs to give a proper goodbye while representing themselves. I think it is only appropriate to do the same for my first-cutest-little-high maintenance-old-quirky house.

My First House Swan Song: All of the home projects that happened in this house. Tons of links to great home tutorials in one place on www.girllovesglam.com

(Sorry for the lack of photos for this first part! Don’t worry, the photos and projects that were documented come further down the post! Click on the photos to take you to each individual tutorial.)

We bought this house in January 2011. It was old, quirky, and very brown. All but two of the rooms in the house were brown. Those rooms were dark green and what my husband liked to refer to as daycare blue. The paint colors weren’t our favorites, but we knew we could change them easily. I started with painting the daycare blue room a gorgeous celery green. It served as my craft room for less than a year before it was turned into our tiny little muchkin’s bedroom. We had one room painted and many, many more square feet to cover.

Deco Board Jewelry Hanger Organizer

Remember that awesome April Showers Bring May Flour giveaway I did last week? One of the sponsors of that giveaway was Deco Boards Unlimited. I knew instantly that they were a company out for an organized girl’s heart like mine. They have beautiful dry erase, cork, and magnetic boards that can all be customized and keep you well organized! When they offered the chance to try out one of their boards, I was thrilled! I ordered one of the galvanized steel boards that you can write on AND are magnetic! I loved the look of it, but wasn’t quite sure where to put it in my house that is already full of boards and lists. I decided to do a little something different with it.

I turned it into a jewelry hanger organizer that I could hang up all of my necklaces on! I love how it looks and how portable it is! Also, another great part about it is that the hooks are just magnetic. That means my Deco Board doesn’t always have to function as a jewelry hanger.

Magnetic Hooks

I bought magnetic hangers from Walmart. You can find them over in the office supply section. They aren’t cute, but they work! Then I spray painted them so that they would match the decor of my bedroom.

Necklace Hanger Organizer

I put all of the magnets up and hung up my necklaces and just stared at its beauty! Seriously though, I woke up several times that first night and just looked at how pretty it was! I love how the steel looks behind the necklaces and the pretty white frame that goes around it all. I am basically obsessed!

I received the Deco Board from Deco Boards Unlimited, but was not compensated for this post. All opinions are 100% mine!
