Helping Children Live Bold Lives

I’m sharing #LISTERINE in my life as part of a LISTERINE® sponsored series for Socialstars™

I still remember this day like it was yesterday. Maybe it is because my four year old won’t let me forget it. It was a day that happened almost two years ago when we went to one of our favorite lunch spots. She was playing with a friend in the play area when both she and the friend came out crying. There was a bully in the playground! I remember thinking that this was the first bully situation I could think of her experiencing and I wanted to help her get through it.

I will tell you now, this was a tough one! The bully was just plain mean! He was pushing kids down and spitting in their faces, screaming in kids faces, and basically just trying to make every other kid cry. His mom came in and told him to stop, but that did absolutely nothing. I told my daughter to go in with her friend and they could play together. If “Mean Carter” came and tried to bother them, they could stand up to him together. Well, that plan failed just as soon as both little girls came out of the playground with tears streaming down their faces.

In that moment, I realized that this was probably a great way for my daughter to be introduced to a bully. Not all bully situations end like they do on television shows. Everyone doesn’t end up being friends in the end and we definitely can’t control other people’s actions. This situation only got worse when the mother of this child tried to get involved with some of the other parents who were trying to help their kids stand up to her son. In the end, we chose to leave and so did many of the other families.

Why do I share this story with you? Because I want to share how we have continued to build on that experience to help give our daughter the confidence she needs to be bold and stand up for herself in situations that she is going to be faced with in her life.

Giving Children Our Time: Light the World with Service

The holiday season can bring a lot of chaos into our lives. When there are so many events and shopping that happens in such a short amount of time, it can be hard to lose sight of what is truly important this holiday season. I love the reminder I received when I watched this video about bringing light to the world by serving others. This holiday season can also be the perfect opportunity to serve. To learn more visit https://www.mormon.org?cid=66200019.

Bumpdate 31 Weeks: Excitement and Mourning

I can’t even believe I am 31 weeks pregnant. Is this real life? If I go full term, I only have 9 weeks left. That is if I go full term! It is pretty insane to think about how much different things are this year than they were a year ago.

I was also pregnant a year ago. We were in Disneyland for Thanksgiving break and were living blissfully unaware of the life changing news that was about to come that following Monday when we learned that we had lost our baby.  [Read more…]

Confessions of a Beauty School Student’s Damaged Hair

This post is sponsored by Savings.com

Beauty school was one of the most influential times of my entire life. It was 2000 hours of hard work, learning, and creating some of the greatest friendships I have ever had. There are so many memories that I hold dear because of beauty school.

Protecting My Family

Sophos provided me with compensation in exchange for this post. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

When I started blogging nearly seven years ago, there were a lot of things I didn’t know. I didn’t know that it would eventually become my full time job. I didn’t know that I would make some of my best friends because of blogging. I didn’t know that blogging would push me to be more creative. All of those things are things that I probably have kind of looked into the future to see a glimpse of, but the thing that I definitely didn’t know when I started sharing my life on the internet is the dangers that happen because of it. When I started blogging, I didn’t know that there would be creeps and hackers trying to invade on my life. I am kind of glad that I didn’t know that because I probably would have been too scared to move forward if I would have known.

The first major invasion of privacy happened about five years ago. I started receiving strange comments that then turned into strange emails. They were from someone who was objectifying my body and it made me so sick. I wanted to quit. I had worked incredibly hard to get my site where it was, but I was willing to give it all up to make it end. It made me sick to think that this person, and more people like this person, could do that to me or to my family. With some help from law enforcement and my tech savvy and supportive husband, we were able to get through that trial.

I became much more careful about what I was sharing online. I focused a lot more on sharing object photos and didn’t share much about myself or my family. Then one day I realized that I just wasn’t happy doing that. I wanted my life to be part of my site and my site to be part of my life. I took a giant leap of faith and started to get more personal again.

Ghosts of Halloween Costumes Past

Sometimes finding the best inspiration can be just from looking to the past. People gain inspiration from vintage decor and fashion all of the time, why not let that same inspiration happen with Halloween costumes?

I know it sounds silly, but I have always loved dressing up for Halloween. I think it is because my mom always made it a point to make Halloween special. She always helped in classroom parties and made our costumes. That love of Halloween really rubbed off on me as I grew up.

I just wanted to take this opportunity to take a look back at some of my favorite costumes from Halloweens in the past and hope that they can inspire you this Halloween! I can’t believe how many of these costumes are coming back in style too!  [Read more…]

You know when you look at a store’s selection and think, “they just get me!”? That is exactly what happened when I was introduced to Joules while I was visiting NYC this summer. I met a couple of the ladies behind the brand and instantly fell in love with the pieces they had brought to share at the event.

Customized Children’s Book

We are serious book fans at our house! Having and educator as a husband, I have always known that books would play a big part in how our children were going to be raised. I am so grateful for his love of books because I just didn’t grow up loving books as much as he did. Seeing his love of reading rub off on our daughter has truly been a joy to watch.

We are constantly on the look out for great children’s books. There are so many children’s books out there! It is sometimes hard to find books that are both enjoyable for the parent and the child to read. We definitely have our favorite authors that we know we can count on, but we are always on the lookout for more great books to add to our collection. [Read more…]

Life is an Adventure

I wouldn’t ever call myself the adventurous type. I like safety and I like the security of knowing what is going on around me. That applies is basically all parts of my life except for my love of roller coasters. Roller coasters are one of the few places I feel like I can let go a little bit and enjoy the adventure. I thought that I could pretty much control the way my life worked… then I became a mom.
