Backyard Campout Ideas for Familes

I will be the first to admit that I am not a huge camper. Since being married, we have camped annually at a family reunion and that has been about the extent of my camping adventures for the past eight years. Last summer, we wanted to try camping in our backyard before family reunion came around so that our four year old could get used to the idea of sleeping in a tent. Family reunion was her first real camping experience and we wanted to be totally prepared for it. I have heard of people taking their camp trailers to camping locations close to their home for the first time each season as kind of a trial run for the year. I loved that idea! It is a great way to make sure you have everything you will need when the time comes to actually go camping.

Backyard camping is the perfect solution for our family right now. We are still a pretty young family and are still getting the hang of things in the camping world. Since our first backyard campout, it has become a favorite of ours. There are a few things that can make backyard camping special. [Read more…]

Home Preschool Ideas and ABC Printable

When we moved in September, we had promised Harper that she could go to preschool when we lived at our new house. She was so excited! During one of Dave’s interviews, we went and toured two preschools that we were considering. Unfortunately, neither of them worked out because of price and distance from our house. Every other preschool was already full. We came way too late in the game and I was left with a devastated three year old who just wanted to go to preschool.

We already were doing a few little things at home to help her learn some of the things she would learn in preschool, but I knew that I needed to have more structure than that since she wouldn’t be getting traditional preschool right away. I had no plans of home schooling and I wouldn’t even call what we have been doing “home school”. We have just simply added “preschool activity” to her chore chart so that we are all held accountable for getting in some sort of preschool activity each day. I have seen her develop a lot overtime and I am so glad that I didn’t put off the learning until she could go to traditional preschool. She will be going to preschool this Fall and she will be very prepared to learn even more.

I just wanted to share a few home preschool ideas so that if you are in the same boat as me and just want to make sure your child is getting some education at home, you can use these ideas!

I am a member of the LDS church. All of the leadership positions are volunteer positions that we are called and asked to do. I have two callings. I teach the 4 year old children each Sunday and I am part of a group who is planning girls’ camp for all of the girls ages 12-17 in our area. We call it stake girls’ camp. I am specifically in charge of the older girls in the group who will be helping with several responsibilities at camp. They are called Youth Camp Leaders. We had a big kick off party for the YCL’s so they could get caught up on what our theme is for the year, what the responsibilities will be, and what to expect this year.

The event was a lot of fun! We got all of the YCL’s to come to the church, where we had pulled all of the couches and chairs from the lobby of the church and put them in the gym with several bean bag chairs so that it would feel like a cozy sleepover. The event went from 6 pm until 11:30 pm. We fed them homemade Chinese food, they played a group game to get them comfortable, and then we had them settle into their seats to introduce the theme. This year, our theme is a superhero theme. I am not in charge of the theme, so I can’t remember all of the details with the theme. There is a great scripture about the power of Christ that they are using to go along with the theme. The power of Christ is the super power that they are using the superhero theme with.

We wanted to tie in that theme with our kick off party, so we invited inspirational women to come and speak to the girls. We introduced these women as everyday superheroes. We told them we wanted them to go everyday like they have a pretend superhero mask on to be an everyday superhero and to also look for the examples of everyday superheroes all around them. We gave them necklaces with glasses on them to represent their superhero masks and I made a little printable to go along with it.

Autumn Scavenger Hunt Preschool Activity

By now, you have probably noticed that we really love doing simple scavenger hunts around here! I think they are a great way to let toddlers and preschool aged children take a moment to really pay attention to the world around them. My daughter loves doing hunts with me, so I continue to make them for each season. It is another reason for us to go “hunting” together! These are perfect for preschool or joy school settings as well.

To add to the collection, now there is an Autumn Scavenger Hunt!

Decorative Halloween Free Printables

Are you getting your house all dolled up for Halloween? Unfortunately I won’t be able to get my Halloween decor out this year. My house still has so many boxes in it that decorating wouldn’t make much sense this year. I was so bummed out about that that I asked my sweet assistant if she would design some great Halloween free printables for my readers. Just because I don’t get to decorate for the holiday, doesn’t mean that you should have to suffer too!

Halloween Hunt Preschool Printable

I never really realized how much I love Halloween since I became an adult. I LOVE Halloween! Here is the funny part… I HATE being scared. I don’t love haunted houses and absolutely hate scary movies. That isn’t what I love about Halloween though. I love the changing seasons, the home decor that gets to come out, the costumes, and the fun little traditions that come along with Halloween. One thing that I absolutely love about the Halloween season are all of the fabulous Halloween ideas that show up on blogs. One of my favorite places to go for Halloween ideas is Cupcake Diaries. She does an awesome Halloween series each year and I am always blown away with the awesome ideas that people have each year!

Recess Revival Kit Free Printable Teacher Gift Idea on www.girllovesglam.com #swissherbs

Back to school! Can you even believe that it is time to think about school again? My husband used to be a classroom teacher and I always loved seeing the different teacher gift ideas that people had and that he would receive. They were all so sweet, but you could definitely tell who put thought into what he would really want. I love the idea of giving a teacher something that they could actually use, like this awesome Recess Revival Kit! For elementary school teachers, recess is the only time most of them get to relax a little and prepare for the kids to come back again. Most elementary school teachers don’t get a prep hour, so a gift to let them restore energy and get a little rest and relaxation during recess is perfect! [Read more…]

Color Hunt Preschool with Free Printable on www.girllovesglam.com

I love finding fun activities that can be turned into something that is educational too. My three year old is at a pretty crucial age for learning. Thankfully I have an awesome teacher husband who can give me suggestions of different preschool activities I can do with our daughter each day that will be best for her particular stage. He mentioned that having activities where preschool aged children can match up different things and solve simple puzzles is great. He suggested doing some sort of preschool scavenger hunt with her where we could implement colors too. That is where the color hunt preschool game printable was born! [Read more…]

Lovebug Valentine Free Printable

I love seeing the cute valentines that are handed out in elementary schools. My husband was a classroom teacher and I loved going through his valentine box to see what kind of valentines the kids would choose. I distinctly remember being in elementary school and the three hardest decisions of the year where… what kind of backpack to get, what to be for Halloween, and what kind of valentines to hand out! They defined who you were in elementary school! It was always embarrassing when you got to school and someone else was giving out the same valentines, so that’s why it is so great that there are so many fabulous free printable valentine cards available now. I am sharing one with you today!
