15 Winter Beauty and Style Tips

Do you remember the 15 Summer Beauty Tips? Well, I thought it was time for a little sequel! Some of you may not know this, but I am a cosmetologist by trade. I love beauty and fashion so here are a few winter beauty and style tips for this season!
#1 Use a good, quality conditioner- I can’t stress this enough. I am asked all of the time what people can do about their static filled hair during the winter. My first suggestion will always be to get a new conditioner. Your hair needs to start with a good base and work with it from there. There are tons of salon quality conditioners out there. I am not going to tell you what one to buy, but ANY salon quality moisture conditioner is going to be better than the crap you can buy at the grocery store.
#2 Invest in a fun pea coat- During the winter, many times when you are out and about, people don’t see your outfit because it is covered by a coat. I have a serious addiction to pea coats and I feel like they are a perfect way to show your style while still staying warm. Find yourself one that reflects your style and you will love it for many seasons to come!

#3 Mix Hard with Soft- Winter is a fun time of the year to really mix textures. Wearing a really soft textured scarf and combat boots or a cable knit sweater and a big, chunky necklace can be a great way to bring a new balance in your wardrobe.
#4 Don’t be afraid to go a little darker with makeup- Whether it is your eye shadow or your lipstick, don’t be afraid to go a little darker in the winter. The contrast of darker colors on winter white skin can be absolutely gorgeous. Use discretion when doing this though. You don’t want dark makeup overkill. Choose one area to make stand out a little more. For example, if you are doing darker makeup on your eyes, go with a nude lip.

#5 Jewel tones- Wearing jewel tones during the winter can make a major statement. They contrast against the gray winter sky and are typically very flattering on most skin tones. Jewel tones are very trendy right now and aren’t hard to find either, so it is an easy tip to follow!
#6 Faux fur- This is one trend that I haven’t participated in…YET. I am currently on the hunt to find the perfect faux fur vest that isn’t a million dollars. I have a secret crush on Rachel Zoe. She has been rocking the faux fur vest for years and I feel like the rest of the world is just cluing in. Wearing faux fur doesn’t have to be a vest though, it can be found all over the place! You could wear faux fur scarves, bags, boots, and even hats! They are really popular right now and look absolutely fabulous.

#7 Moisturize- I know I already touched on this a little bit, but this is how important I really think this is! The winter months do a major number on our bodies when it comes to moisture. Those months seem to suck out every last bit of moisture that our bodies have in them. It is so important to moisturize. Put on a good moisturizer before putting your makeup on. Lotion up after getting out of the shower and before going to bed. This will keep your skin looking and feeling great and hopefully prevent painful cracked skin!
#8 Big, chunky jewelry- During the winter months it can be really fun to layer, especially when it comes to jewelry. When it is summertime, you want to feel light and free, but when it comes to the winter months, it is fun to have those layers. Wearing statement jewelry pieces can be a perfect way to glam up any look and it is SO on trend right now. You can find statement jewelry pieces just about anywhere on any budget.

#8 Give your hair a break- If you are staying home one day, use that opportunity to give your hair a little R&R. Let your hair air dry and maybe even let it sit in some conditioner for a half hour while you are mopping your floors. Giving your hair a little break from the heat can make a big difference. Make sure you do it on a day you aren’t going anywhere though because you don’t want to go outside with wet hair during the winter!
#9 Wear scarves- Scarves are one accessory that you can’t get away with wearing all year long, so take advantage of the winter and wear them! There are so many different styles to choose from, they are made to fit every style and budget. Don’t feel like you have to wear them with your coat either. Scarves look great in your everyday wardrobe!

#10 Lipstick- I know I kind of touched on this earlier, but wear lipstick! Not only is it going to give your lips a little moisture, but it is going to put a pop of color on your face that nothing else can! I love wearing lipstick on days that I don’t have a lot of time because I can wear just mascara, eyeliner, and a great red lip to look totally done up!
#11 Boots, boots, boots- You can’t wear boots for long (ok maybe you can if you live in Idaho like me), so take advantage of the time that you can rock them! There are so many styles of boots to choose from too! I personally love the riding boots, combat boots, and hunter boots that are so popular right now. I may have just purchased myself a new pair of boots last week too! Boots are awesome because they are stylish AND practical during the winter to keep your tootsies nice and warm. One of the only times that you can justify spending money on shoes and your husband might just understand.

#12 Hats- Hats rock my world. Especially during the winter. Having naturally curly hair during the winter can suck. Big time. Having a cute hat to cover your head when it starts to snow, is a perfect safe haven for your freshly straightened hair. There are so many styles of hats right now that make it an easy trend to follow.
#13 Graphic Sweaters- I will admit, I am obsessed with graphic sweaters. I only own one. A polka dot one. I wish I owned more. Sweaters are a wintertime staple, so why not take them up a notch and get a super cute tribal print or striped one? I love the ones with animals or shapes on the fronts too. It is kind of a fashionable twist on the “ugly Christmas sweater”.

#15 Blazers, not just for job interviews- I have recently learned to LOVE blazers. They look good with just about everything. I love wearing them with everything from colored skinny jeans to pencil skirts. They are a great way to bring some shape to your midsection and to dress up any t shirt. They come in every color under the sun and have lots of patterns too! I highly recommend owning one (or 12) to bring some color into your winter wardrobe.
So how do you feel? Do you feel like you can tackle the rest of winter? For most of you, there isn’t much of winter left, but for a few of us living in frozen tundras, just because the calendar says winter comes to an end doesn’t mean the weather clues in, so I will be wearing my winter fashion until probably May! Here’s to staying warm and looking fabulous!

I need to be better about air drying my hair. My hair is super dry all of the time. I know it doesn't help that I straighten and blow dry it all of the time.

Thanks for the tips, lady!

I love these tips, and I really can use a few this time of year when it's so drab. My skin has been soo dry lately, so I completely agree with the moisterizing and also extra conditioner. Also, I couldn't live wthout a scarf...it's my go-to every day, haha!I like your blog! :)Blessings,Leslie
