Easy Retro Fruit Nail Art with Polka Dots. Super simple instructions to create your own watermelon and pineapple nail art on www.girllovesglam.com

Sometimes I see something and I am instantly inspired to create something similar. This wasn’t always the case when it came to nail art. I used to see different nail art techniques and was then inspired to do something similar with my own twist to it, but never really anything that was inspired by something that wasn’t already nail art. It wasn’t until I went to go get my nails done by a crazy talented girl I work with that I realized that you could be inspired by anything for nail art. She did my nails inspired by an adorable grouping of pillows she had seen. It blew. me. away.

Once I saw that, I realized I could be inspired by everything around me. This was totally the case when I saw this [Read more…]

Easy Summer Makeup Tips on www.girllovesglam.com #WalgreensBeauty #shop

I am all about making life sweet and simple during the summer. That includes my makeup look. I am way too busy creating awesome memories with my family to fuss too much about my makeup. Summer beauty should be about simplicity that doesn’t have to be touched up much throughout the day. I put together a simple makeup look that is chock full of my favorite makeup tips that you can rock everyday this summer.

Summer Beauty Essentials on www.girllovesglam.com #WalgreensBeauty #Shop

Remember how I said simple? Most days, I use only about five beauty items.

*Foundation

*Sunscreen

*Lip color

*Mascara

*Eyebrow color

Here is how I use each of those items to create my perfect summer look…

Easy DIY tinted moisturizer using sunscreen and foundation on www.girllovesglam.com #WalgreensBeauty #shop

The first thing I do, is start with a light sunscreen. This Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch sunscreen is just the right texture. I mix the sunscreen with my liquid foundation. Depending on how my skin is, I mix more or less foundation with my sunscreen to give the DIY tinted moisturizer more or less coverage. I put my tinted moisturizer all over my face. Then, I fill in my eyebrows. Don’t ever skip filling in your eyebrows!

Next comes the mascara. For me, summertime means water fun. Not that I am lounging by the pool or anything, but I tend to get wet a lot during the summer. Most of the time it is just getting sprinkled at a splash park, or sprayed in the face by a sprinkler I am trying to move on my lawn. I use nothing but waterproof mascara during the summer. I have learned to really love this Revlon Lash Potion mascara. It helps your lashes grow while you wear it!

Lastly, comes the lip color. I decided to try the Revlon ColorStay Moisture Stain. Instead of a lipstick, this is a lip stain that adds color to your lips that won’t wear off like lipstick does. I am pretty much obsessed with this stuff! The color is fantastic.

Easy Patriotic Star Leis and Giveaway!

Easy Patriotic Star Leis

I have never seen a little girl get more excited to see American flags around town than my daughter. She gets SO excited to see them. She calls them “flags with stars” and has to tell us every time she sees one. Little does she know that there is a holiday just around the corner that she will be able see more “flags with stars” than she could ever dream of. She has also recently become obsessed with dress up and jewelry so I decided to marry the two ideas and create a fun little patriotic star lei for her to wear on the 4th of July (and everyday before and after that because she is pretty much obsessed) using vinyl!

I chose vinyl because it is inexpensive, durable, and unlike the cheapo patriotic necklaces that get wet and then bleed color all over your shirt, the vinyl can handle a little water to them on a summer day too! I am excited to be teaming up with Expressions Vinyl as one of their monthly ambassadors to bring you fun projects like this one that will give you fresh ideas for you to do with their awesome vinyl! This is also a fun project because your kids can totally be involved! They are really quick and easy to make.

To make these necklaces, you will need…

Patriotic Necklace Supplies

*Vinyl in as many colors as you want on your necklaces

*Baker’s twine

*Electronic craft cutter

Patriotic Necklace Kid Craft

Cut stars out of each color using your electronic craft cutter. My stars are 2.5 inches each. Lay one star with the sticky side up and lay the piece of twine on top of it.

How to make a patriotic necklace

Take another piece of vinyl the same color and lay it over the top of the other star with the sticky sides touching each other.

Patriotic Necklace Tutorial

Repeat these steps until you have enough stars to cover the length you want your necklace to be.

DIY Patriotic Necklace

Tie the ends of the twine together to create your necklace and you are done!

These are so quick and easy to make, you can make them for your entire neighborhood so your kids and all of their friends can sport them at the parade together. They would love to make them too!

Make sure to check out THIS POST and THIS POST by the other two Expressions Vinyl ambassadors to get other great 4th of July ideas! To celebrate the beginning of our fun Expressions Vinyl Ambassador team, we are having a giveaway for a $75 gift card for Expressions Vinyl! To enter, use the Rafflecopter widget below. Good luck!

DIY Hair Chalking for the 4th of July

The 4th of July is almost here! Bring on the warm weather, the BBQ food, the fireworks, and the parades! I absolutely love the 4th of July. I always dress up in red, white, and blue on Independence Day, but I thought it would be fun to be able to step it up a notch this year and adding some temporary color to my hair with some DIY hair chalking! I created a full tutorial so that you can add temporary color to your hair on the big day too! I am joining in with over 100 of my blogging besties to bring you some freaking awesome 4th of July projects for you as part of our Three Cheers for the Red, White, and Blue round up! There are links to each of these posts below my tutorial.

Now for the epic hair chalking DIY tutorial.

DIY Hair Chalking for the 4th of July

Here is what you need to chalk your hair…

*Chalk (chalk pastels from a craft store work best, but any chalk would work)

*Spray water bottle or soaking wet wash cloth

*Flat iron

*Hair gel

*Hair spray

How to add temporary hair color

First, soak the parts of your hair that you want to color. You can do this with either a wet wash cloth or a spray water bottle. You don’t have to get the entire piece of hair wet, just the part of the hair that you want to get colored.

Hair chalking how to tutorial

Now rub the chalk up and down on the wet part of your hair. Note that I took a picture using sidewalk chalk on my hair, but I ended up using chalk pastels instead. The sidewalk chalk didn’t come out as the right colors. The red was pink instead of being red when I used the sidewalk chalk. Rub each section of your hair with the color of chalk that you want that piece of hair to be. Let hair dry completely and put a little hair gel on over the color. Add more chalk to each strand and let it dry out again. If you don’t want the color to be as long lasting, don’t use the hair gel.

How to hair chalk at home

Flat iron each of color strands and spray them with hair spray. Now style them how you wish!

Summertime Fun Survival Kit

I am a member of the Collective Bias®  Social Fabric® Community.  This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper amplification for Collective Bias and its advertiser. #CelebrateEveryGoal #CollectiveBias

We recently became a diaper free household! Potty training is over and it is just in time for summer. It is nice to know that we can go out as a family on all sorts of adventures without having to worry about remembering the diaper bag or having to change diapers in awkward situations. We plan on being on the go a lot this summer now that we are diaper free. What a better way to celebrate, right? Since I know that we will be out and about a lot, I wanted to put together a little kit to keep in our car that is a little bit first aid and a little bit survival of the summer. It is perfect for when you get in situations that you realize that you need something ASAP and you aren’t close to home to get it.

Summer Fun Survival and First Aid Kit #ad

I knew that the perfect place to find great items for a summertime survival kit would be Walgreens. I headed over and found just about everything I needed for my kit on one end cap.

Celebrate Every Goal in Walgreens

Johnson & Johnson and Walgreens have put together this awesome deal so you can celebrate every goal in your family too! If you purchase $15 of select Johnson & Johnson products on these select end caps, you can earn 3,000 points for your Walgreens Balance Rewards. It is totally a win, win situation because they are items you use all of the time!

Here is what I included in my summertime survival kit…

Summer Fun Survival Kit Must Haves #ad

I got Band-Aids, Neutragena Sunscreen, Tylenol, lip balm, and almonds. I also got a pencil case to put all of this in so that it is nice and compact for the car. Each of these items are great to have on hand in your car during the summer because you seriously don’t know when you might feel a headache coming on, or your child gets a scrape, or your lips are killing you because they are so chapped, or you are starving, or you forgot to pack the sunscreen. I could go on and on about why I chose each item for my survival kit. I wanted to be sure to keep it simple so I could fit it all in a pencil case, but if you wanted to make a larger one, you could include tons of other great items too like Aveeno lotion, Zyrtec, and Neosporin.

Summer Survival Kit #ad

I took the Tylenol, the lip balm, and the Band-Aids out of their packaging so they would fit in the pencil case more easily. I put each item in the pencil case and actually had room that I could put a few other items in there too!

Summer Fun Survival Kit to keep in your car #ad

The pencil case is just the right size that I can slide it under the seat in my car and I can have it handy for all of our summertime fun. What do you have that is worth celebrating this summer?

Summer Style Must Haves

I love shopping when the seasons change. Okay, okay I love shopping anytime… BUT I especially love shopping when the seasons change. I like to look at my wardrobe and look at what the new trends are for the season and see what must have items I need to add to my closet. I have already started adding some of this goodness to my closet, but I wanted to share some of my summer style must haves with you! Recently, I was introduced to ShopLately, an online marketplace that is full of tons of different shops that you can shop from all at the same time! It has been my new one stop shop for my Summer style and I found all of these goodies there.

Summer Style Must Haves

Printed Maxi Skirt– Maxi skirts are the greatest invention on earth for moms with young children. You can feel super chic while you wear them, but you can also bend over, climb up, and do any other task motherhood asks of you. I am in love with printed maxi skirts this season. I am always a sucker for stripes and I love that this skirt has vertical stripes so it can make my short 5′ 4” frame look taller than it is.

Vintage Inspired Swimwear– I love all of the vintage inspired swimwear that is available. Years ago, I had to search high and low to find a vintage inspired swimming suit and now you can find them all over the place. The great thing about vintage inspired swimwear, is that it is usually much more flattering on curves than many other swimming suits are. I am completely smitten by this swimming suit because I think it would literally look good on anyone! It hides everything without wearing an ugly “mom suit”. And let’s be honest, you can’t ever go wrong with a nautical theme in my book. Perfection!

Floral Chiffon Kimono– Oh, you guys. I was really torn about the kimono trend at first, but I am totally on board now. I own this floral kimono and  I literally wear it weekly. It looks amazing with skinny jeans, shorts, skirts, as a swimming suit cover up… everything! I feel like I can throw it on top of any top and it instantly dresses it up. This particular kimono is so soft and luxurious feeling too. I am basically obsessed. I can’t wait to add to my kimono collection throughout the summer.

Work Out Tanks– There has got to be some sort of study done to prove the theory that when you have cute workout clothes, you work out more often. Even if there isn’t an official study done, I am a firm believer of that. If I have cute workout clothes, I workout more often and I feel like I even work out harder if I can actually see my body instead of wearing big, over sized shirts. I love exercising outside during the summer and although I don’t actually love running, I think this tank is hilarious and partially true on my part. I workout because I love food…. like a lot.

Flirty Skirts– There are always going to be those special events during the summer months that you need to find something a little more special to wear. I am a huge fan of having a few skirts that you know you can count on for moments like these. When the time comes, you don’t have to put a lot of thought into what you are going to wear. I absolutely love stripes and love all of these black and white striped skirts that I have seen around lately. This skirt would be perfect to wear to a wedding, girls’ night, or date night.

Dressy Flat Sandals– I love tall shoes. I am so short that I feel like I need to wear tall shoes to make up for the lack of height that I have genetically, but tall wedge sandals aren’t always the best thing to wear to every occasion. I should now tell you how much I hate flip flops. I am a total hater of flip flops. I own them and wear them when I am going to a water park or something because I don’t really care if they get stolen because they are so cheap, but I am a firm believer in having some classy flat sandals. I am so in love with these gold bow sandals. I own them and wear them all of the time. I feel like I can wear them with a skirt, jeans, or shorts. The best part? They are actually jelly sandals! They don’t even look like it, do they?!

Oxfords– Words can hardly express my gratitude that oxfords are in style. Like I said, I love anything vintage inspired. I have owned several oxford type shoes in my lifetime and still love them to this day. They are a summer must have for me because sometimes you just need a great pair of closed toe shoes during the summer. I think that oxford shoes are perfect because you can wear them without socks (or no show socks) and they look fun and casual without wearing your running shoes. You can run around in them and still look totally chic.

Now that I have spilled my guts about my Summer style must haves, what are yours? What pieces of clothing do you plan on adding to your closet this season?

What I Wore: Muah! Summer Style

A few weeks ago, I went to Snap Conference. When you are planning on spending days upon days full of incredibly talented blogger women, you think and then rethink and then rethink and maybe even rethink some more about what you are going to wear. After laying out all of my favorite clothes on my bed, I came up with this outfit. I knew it was an instant hit.

Really, it is a combination of everything that I love. Makeup, t-shirts, prints, stretchy skirts, and cute wedge shoes. I mean, does it get any better than that?

Wait! It does get better. There are kisses on the back! Okay, now it officially doesn’t get any better.

Muah Lipstick Shirt and Aztec Skirt outfit on www.girllovesglam.com

This summer, if you are ever in doubt about what to wear all you need to do is pick out your favorite t-shirt. Instead of pairing it with the same pair of jeans that you usually wear with it, try pairing it with a jersey knit skirt. There are so many skirt options out there including varying lengths and patterns so the possibilities are pretty endless. Try the shirt with different skirts. Give yourself a little variety. You will thank me later.

Teaching Kids Healthy Habits

When Dave and I were first married, we would talk about our future family. We would talk about dreams we had for our family and what types of things we wanted to do to create a happy family unit. One thing we both would talk about was our desire to raise a healthy family. Now that we are parents, we are put in the position to make that dream a reality.

It can be tough to make your kids eat all of their vegetables, but one thing that is easy to teach your kids about is exercise. Kids don’t look at being active as exercise. They look at it as play. Have you tried to play some of their activities lately? They can be a good workout! What happens between age 4 and 30 to make us realize that being active is no longer an enjoyable activity, but is looked out as exercise? I think life just gets in the way a lot of times, but I also think it is important to each kids while they are young that being active isn’t a bad thing. It can be fun and should be a natural part of their daily lives.

Teach health through playing with your kids

The best way to teach a child about healthy habits, is through example. Get out there and live a healthy and active lifestyle that your kids can see. Even better? Involve your kids too! Here are five ways I suggest teaching your kids about staying active as an adult.

1. Go for a walk- We love going for walks as a family. It is a great time to get outside, get unplugged from our devices, and to be able to enjoy conversation. It is great exercise too! You can play different games with younger kids if they get restless if they are in a stroller during a walk too. You can have them listen for different things and have you guess what they hear, or have them look for items on your walk too!

2. Do an exercise video- I love doing exercise videos when the weather is no good outside. Although the workout is usually a little more intense if I do it during nap time, I prefer to do my workout videos when my daughter can participate with me. She doesn’t do anything with weights or anything, but she loves to mimic my actions. She isn’t necessarily getting an intense aerobic workout, but she is watching her mom do an exercise while engaging with her. It is all about teaching by example.

3. Play on the playground- This can be a seriously intense workout as an adult. As a kid, I never thought about how much work it was to swing, run up the tires, or climb the monkey bars. Playing on a playground is just natural for kids. Little kids love seeing their parents play with them on the playground. This is a great way to show your kids that you want to engage with them, but you aren’t too lazy to get up and get some physical activity either!

Teaching Kids Healthy Habits by www.girllovesglam.com

4. Workout in the backyard- I have recently found my favorite way of working out. I love working out in my yard while my daughter plays on her swing set. I take a yoga mat, a set of hand weights, and water out by her swing set and I do a circuit workout while she plays. When it is time for me to do high knees, lunges, or just a little jog, I do them around the swing set. She thinks it is the funniest thing in the world to see her mom run around her swing set. I love doing triceps dips off of a little ledge on the swing set too. After my daughter is done swinging, she comes in and joins me in doing dips, wall sits, and planks. Have you ever seen a 2 year old plank? It looks more like a two year old laying on a yoga mat while laughing at her mom who’s arms are shaking from being in a plank. It is fun and it teaches kids that you can take your intense workout anywhere!

5. Go swimming- There aren’t many kids in the world who don’t love swimming. Swimming is a great cardiac workout. Although you probably won’t be swimming laps while your kids are at the pool with you, you can still get a good workout in by lifting your kids onto slides, lifting them to help them float, and throwing them into the air to make them splash. Once again, it is all about teaching by example. Don’t be the parent who sits on the side and plays on their phone while they feel bad about how they look in a swimming suit. Do something about it and swim with your kids!

Here’s to a happy and healthy summer! How will you show your kids how to be active through your example?
