Island in the Sun Cupcakes

We went to an island themed party last week. I signed up to bring an island themed desert. This is what I came up with.

My Phineas and Ferb (Perry) Cookie Tute!

Dave is a 3rd grade teacher. After hearing his students talk about Phineas and Ferb so much, he decided to watch it himself. Well, we are hooked now! It is so funny! He just turned 24 last month and of course I had to make him some Phineas and Ferb themed cookies. What else would a 24 year old want? Lucky you, you get to learn how to make them too! Just a warning, this post is long!

phineascookies

This what they look like. If you aren’t familiar with these characters, these cookies might be a little on the hideous side, but I LOVE them!

phineasstep1

This is what you will need:

Sugar cookie mix (or if you are more of a go getter, do home made), shredded coconut, food coloring, frosting, wafer cookies, black gel frosting, Sour Patch Kids, square and triangle cookie cutters, and frosting eyeballs.

I have to direct you to Karen’s Cookies to get these adorable frosting eyes. They made the cookies look so good! I got the bigger ones, they are only roughly $3 for about 80 of them! I also got the cookie cutters there. They are great!

I had to make quite a few cookies so I baked them and here is where you go from there…

phineasstep2

Dump your frosting in a bowl and add food coloring to start creating your teal color for Perry the Platypus. Now this will show how much I really do like the show, in their Christmas album, there is a song that describes Perry as “A Lovely Shade of Teal”. So I had to find a great shade for that. I used the regular food coloring colors, along with the neon ones and came up with this after a while.

phineasstep3

I would say that looks like a pretty “lovely shade of teal” myself!

phineasstep4

Now frost all of your square/rectangle cookies in the teal color. Now you are creating a Perry!

phineasstep5

My favorite part of these cookies are Perry’s tail. I took the yellow/orange wafer cookies and broke them in half. Then put them on the end of Perry.

phineasstep6

Now for Perry’s mouth. All I did was put an orange Sour Patch Kid across from his tail and up just slightly to create a Perry mouth.

phineasstep7

It is time for Perry to grow some feet! Cut yellow Sour patch kids in half and add them to the bottom of Perry to give him some feet.

phineasstep8

Now you can use your super cute frosting eyeballs that you got from Karen’s Cookies and he comes to life!

phineasstep9

Now it is Phineas’ turn!

phineasstep10

Add food coloring to more frosting to create a nice flesh color.

phineasstep11

Frost all of your triangles.

phineasstep12

Put some shredded coconut in a bowl and mix it with some orange food coloring. This is going to be his hair!

phineasstep13

Add a little bit of coconut to the corner of each triangle. Phineas is starting to come to life!

phineasstep14

Add two more of your eyeballs to your cookies just barely down the edge from his hair. This part I had to use a picture of him to be sure I got the angles right. Just think of the top edge as the bridge of his nose.

phineasstep15

Now take your black gel and give him a smile! All you have to do is add a little bent line at the bottom!

You are done! All of your kiddos (or husbands) will love them!

Jeep vs. Concrete Wall

The concrete wall won.
At the moment, we are living at my grandparents house while they are in Yuma, AZ soaking up the sun. Dave and I have been carpooling to Idaho Falls everday that I work so that we can save on gas money. I am so glad that we carpooled this morning. The roads were the slickest that I have ever seen. I was in the passenger seat holding our little puppy, Sadie. We hit a really slick patch of ice and slid off the road. We were heading right towards either a telephone pole and a concrete box for irrigation pumps. Luckily, we hit the concrete box. The telephone pole could have done much worse.
We weren’t hurt seriously, but it really puts things into perspective. I have such an incredible husband. He threw his arm out to try to keep me from being hurt. In the process he hurt his other wrist. My mom and dad were lifesavers coming right to our rescue and driving us around all day today. The sweet lady named Jennifer that let Sadie and I come into her house and stay warm until the police officer and tow truck came. The insurance agent, doctors, coworkers, Dave’s students, and everyone else that helped us out today. We are so lucky that we are safe. We are driving a rental car until our Jeep is fixed. Days like today really remind me what is important in life.
Things that I am greatful for…
My husband
Sadie puppy
Mom and Dad
Carson and Payton (the bros)
Police officers
Kind residents of this city
Prayer
Car insurance
Doctors
My Heavenly Father
Jesus Christ
Take a moment and think of what you are greatful for.

Winner of our Giveaway! And cupcake tutorial!

Well first of all, I have to say I am sorry about bailing on you yesterday! It ended up being a little bit nuts! We found our dream house! Today we are going to put an offer on it! Wish us luck! So here is the moment you all have been waiting for. The winner of our EveryPrettyThing giveaway is…
#9 DotheTwist
Congrats! I am totally jealous! Please email me at artistrybymckenzieg(at)hotmail.com and let me know what your address is so that you can get your cute pillow!
Because you didn’t get a post yesterday, you get 2 posts today! Right now, you get a tutorial! I made the cutest cupcakes yesterday! Here they are!
Rudolf the Rednosed Cupcake
They were a huge hit at our family Christmas party last night, and were so easy to make. Make them for your Christmas parties coming up! Here is what you will need…
*Mini Oreos
*Pretzel twists
*Chocolate chips
*Chocolate cake mix
*Chocolate frosting
*Black decorating gel
*Christmas M&Ms
*Cupcake baking cups
Step 1: Bake the cupcakes as directed on the cake mix box. Let the cupcakes cool
.
Step 2: While your cupcakes are cooling prepare your pretzels. Snap pretzels in 1/2 then snap the tops off of them. This will make them look like little antlers. Put them on a plate and set them aside.
Step 3: Separate the Oreos and keep the halves with the cream on them. Set aside.
Step 4: Frost your cupcakes once they have cooled. I used the Betty Crocker Whipped Chocolate. It goes on so well! I would suggest using the whipped kind.
Step 5: Put 2 Oreo halves on each cupcake towards the top. They will be the reindeer eyes.
Step 6: Use the decorating gel to make the reindeer mouth. Make a “J” shape and then a backwards “J” to create a mouth shape.
Step 7: Put a chocolate chip on each Oreo to finish the eyes.
Step 8: Put a red M&M in the center of the cupcake at the top of the mouth. This is your red reindeer nose!
Step 9: Now you get to add the antlers! Poke 2 pretzels into the top of the cupcake and you have a completed reindeer!
Aren’t they so cute?

Jingle all the Way Wreath TUTORIAL!

Just as I promised, here is your first “gift” of Christmas! A new tutorial!
Isn’t it so cute? Let’s get started.
Step1:
Sorry, my next instructions are a little tough to read, so I will just tell you again… Cut satin in long strips that are about 2 1/2 inches wide.
Step 2:
Step 3:
 Step 4:
Step 5:
Step 6:
Step 7:
Step 8:
Step 9:
Ta-dah! You are done!
After I finished this wreath, I had it sitting next to the doorway. My hubby walked in and litterally gasped and said “Woah! Do we get to keep this?” I had been making lots of things to sell at the open houses I had coming up. He was impressed! That is even coming from a “Manly Man”. It must be pretty breathtaking!
Happy Crafting!

Holiday Ruffle Scarf TUTORIAL!

The Holiday Ruffle Scarf
I can’t even tell you how excited I am about this tutorial! It is so easy, and it looks so elegant! Here are the materials you need:
* 11”x60” piece of satin
*sewing machine and matching thread
*scissors
*measuring tape
*white crayon
Step 1:
Cut your satin to size. The size I used is a rough estimate. I had a lot of scraps of satin in different colors that I have been making these scarves with. Each of them are a few inches different, but they all end up looking pretty much the same!
Step 2:
Measure and mark spots 2 to 3 inches apart (I have three marked lines, the more you do, the more ruffles you will have). Mark with your white crayon all the way down the back of your fabric. This is where your ruffles will be.
Step 3:
Sew along the lines you have drawn with long stitches.
Step 4:
Pull one string from the stitch and make the satin ruffle. Pull to make ruffles even.
It should end up looking like this…
Step 5:
With right sides together, fold in half (lengthwise) and pin. Also pin one of the ends as well.
Step 6:
Sew along your pinned edges with your normal sewing straight stitch (be sure to adjust your sewing machine back to the smaller stitch after using the long stitch earlier).
Step 7:
Turn your scarf right side out.
Step 8:
Sew your open side shut with rough edges folded in.
Even out your ruffles again and…
you are done!
It can be worn without a knot…
Or with a knot! They are both beautiful!
Happy creating!

Beach Bag and Towel all in 1 TUTORIAL!

This post contains affiliate links.
I thought it was time to give you girls a new
{GLAMTASTIC TUTORIAL}
This beach bag is just perfect! It is not only super cute, but extremely useful!
Here is what you will need…
*Beach Towel (I got mine at Old Navy)
*Hand Towel (for inside pocket)
*Wash Cloth (for outside pocket)
*2 different styles of thick ribbon (mine is 1 1/2” thick)
*Thinner ribbon

The first thing you need to do is take both of your thicker ribbons and measure them out to be about 6” wider than the beach towel. Cut them to that length and sew a line right down the center of the ribbon with stitches that are far apart.

Next, scrunch the ribbon together by holding one of the threads on the end of the ribbon and pushing the ribbon down. Ruffle the ribbons to be the same width as your beach towel. Fold your beach towel in half, and pin your ruffles about 4” and 6” from the folded edge of the towel. This will end up being on the bottom part of your bag.

Now, sew your ruffles onto your beach towel.

Now, take the hand towel and fold it in half (hamburger way). Then sew 1 line right down the center to create 2 pockets.

Pin the hand towel to the inside of the beach towel. Sew along the side edges, and the bottom piece to create 1 large pocket and then the 2 smaller pockets in the front. This will be a pocket that will be in the inside of your bag!

Next, create ruffles with the thin ribbon. Sew it to the bottom of the small wash cloth.

Pin the wash cloth to the front of the towel, a few inches above the wide ruffles. Sew the 2 sides and bottom of the wash cloth to create an outer pocket.

Lay the beach towel out and take the thick ribbon and lay it out on the edge of the towel. Fold the towel over and pin it so that it is wide enough to go over the ribbon. Take the ribbon out. Do this on both sides of the towel. These will be your straps. The bag will cinch on the sides.

Sew the sides that are pinned.

Melt the edges of your ribbon so that they don’t fray and put a safety pin on the end and feed it through the sides of the towel. Do this on each side.

Pull the ribbon and tie it together in a bow. Tie the two front pieces together and the two back pieces together. These will make your front and back straps.

Here are my inside pockets! I put the smaller items in the small compartments, and my book in the bigger compartment.

This is my outside pocket. Full of the things that I will need to find at a moment’s notice! Like my keys and phone!

The best part is that you can just untie the straps and it turns right back into your towel! You don’t even have to pack a towel! Then when the swimming day is over, put your wet swimming suit in the towel part and it won’t get your treasures wet that are in your other pockets! The nice thing about having the straps cinch on the side is that your items won’t slip out of your towel!
You will be totally styling at the beach, pool, or just wherever this summer!
Please send me a link or email of pictures if you make this !

Damask Canvas Mother’s Day Gift!

I made this canvas for my mom for Mother’s Day and she {LOVED} it!
I went to Michaels and they had their canvas value packs were buy 1 get 1 free! I made 1 for my mom, and I am working on 3 others that are just a little different for me! I bought a stencil at Michaels too and it was all pretty easy! If you need help making one, there is a tutorial here, but It is pretty self explanitory! Instead of hand painting the canvas itself, I just spray painted it. It was super easy, but just know that stencil paint takes FOREVER to dry!
