A Few Tips for Winter Decorating

I know I probably sound like a broken record here (do people even know what that means anymore? Do people listen to records?), BUT I honestly think that winter is the most awkward time of the year for home decor. Once Christmas is over, then what? Do you jump right into Valentine’s Day? Do you put up all of your normal, everyday decor? Well, personally, I like to have a little winter touch to my decor first, then bring on the hearts when it is later in January. I wanted to keep it pretty simple.
I did a TV segment on a news station in Utah between Christmas and New Years that was all about decorating for the Winter. It was such a short segment that I didn’t get any sort of video or anything to share with you, so I will just share a few pointers.
*Try to stick with colors like blue, silver, or white. These resemble snow and ice and make your decor feel more winter related than Christmas.
*You can also go for more of a cabin feel and use garland. Be careful not to get certain types of garland that look too much like a Christmas tree.
*Bring in your everyday decor. Winter decor isn’t up for very long because of all of the holidays that come up, so you don’t want this decor to be a major investment. If you have white, blue, or metallic decor, it works perfectly!
*Painting pine cones can be a great way to really bring the winter flair to your decor. It is SO easy too. You can dip the pine cones, paint the tips of them, or even just spray paint them.
*Bring light into your decor. Try not to use Christmas lights. Tea lights are a great way to bring in light without it resembling Christmas. When you bring in light, it kind of represents the warm cozy fire to keep you warm on cold winter nights. Also, it gets dark so early during the winter and it is fun to have some added light in the decor.
For my faux mantel, I used the same gilver wreath that I used in my Christmas mantel because the metallic isn’t overly Christmasy. I took out the red and gold pine cones and left the blue and mint colored ones that were used on the Christmas mantel too. I brought in some of my white and blue jars from my everyday decor along with a berry wreath and owl that both used to be different colors. To bring in some light, I put a few of my faux etched glass votives on there too. I love that it is simple, crisp, and clean looking. It is refreshing after all of the clutter that Christmas seems to bring.
